The Enormous Space

About The Enormous Space

This performance was part of the J G Ballard Project. In the Enormous Space, a middle aged banker cuts himself off from society, severs all connections with the outside world, and regresses to a savage state of being, in his own home. Ballard is exploring uncomfortable relationship with suburbia. Even though he lived in the suburbs of London most of his life, he still writes about it as if it were a completely alien environment.

Untitled Projects staged this story in a suburban semi detached house near Glasgow, where we bussed the small audience each night from the city centre. We took as little as possible with us into the house, using the domestic lighting and technology we found there to facilitate the work.

Angus Balbernie gave a solo performance as the banker, Gerald Ballantyne.
